Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) A Movement Against Enforced Disappearances

Objectives

To exert collective pressure on the authorities to:

  • To provide information about the whereabouts of the missing
  • Put an end to the practice of Enforced Disappearances.
  • Put in place mechanisms for justice and reparation including compensation and rehabilitation of those directly affected by Enforced Disappearances.
  • Repeal repressive measures like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act., Disturbed Area Act, Public Safety Act which grant impunity to the armed forces and perpetrators of Forced Disappearances
  • Set up an impartial commission of inquiry to investigate cases of Enforced Disappearance and the judgment and sanction of those responsible for the crime.
  • Promote legal norms classifying Enforced Disappearance as a crime against humanity. Thereby constitute methods of obtaining justice and of preventing Enforced Disappearance.

Generate awareness about the plight of the women in situations of violent conflict. Particularly the status of the Half Widows or the spouses of the Disappeared whose voice remains buried in the larger political and militaristic discourse, so that steps can be taken to enable them to carry on their lives with dignity and assurance.

To issue appeals to and transmit information to competent international organizations, such as: The U.N. Commission on Human Rights and its Sub-Commission, The U.N. Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, which examines forced disappearance cases, communicates with governments, and produces annual reports attempting to resolve cases.

To develop and promote international solidarity with relatives of the detained and disappeared, including the formation of Support Groups in diverse countries.

To provide legal, medical, psychological and social assistance to the families of the disappeared.

To organize events and activities promoting international awareness of the grave problem of Enforced Disappearance and the urgent need to eliminate this practice.

To organise meetings, demonstrations and other events like photo exhibitions to establish links between media, urban and rural groups. as well as with Govt officials/ policy makers, civil society.
